O' Hallowed Night

Legend says it started in a moonlit cemetery many years ago on a Halloween night. A lone jack o'lantern sat perched atop a fence post, faintly illuminated by a candle close to extinguishment. The details are hazy and no one is sure why, but a mischievous child decided to be cruel and knock the pumpkin from its post and break it into pieces on the ground below. The child then stomped the poor pumpkin into the earth and left it there to rot in the cemetery. The youngster's brutish laughter echoed across the hills and caught the attention of a passing witch who took pity on the poor jack o'lantern. She flew down and began chanting an incantation, "Pulp and pumpkin, spice and earth, form ye here, I give thee birth. Come together, bone and bind, revenge ye seek, revenge ye find."
 
From the pieces of broken pumpkin, twists of branches grew from the pulpy flesh, mangling into arms and legs. Bones rose up from the earth and stitched themselves together to form the head and heart of the figure. The witch offered her hat to help clothe the ghastly figure as she grinned, pleased with crafting a creature of such grotesque beauty.
 
As with every parable, it's safe to say the child learned their lesson that night. Never touch a jack o'lantern on a Halloween night.
